For the past 24 years Northport and Centerport residents — not to mention the rest of the Island — have grown to know and love a little hut known as The Shack Restaurant located on 25A near Twin Ponds.
The former biker bar was taken over by its current owner Mace Colodny, of Centerport, nearly a quarter century ago.
Mace and his sister Kathleen, together, have turned what Mace referred to as a "dilapidated shed," into so much more.
“We're a family here and cater more to mom, dad and grandma," said Mace.
The Shack used to be all about burgers, hot dogs, french fries and cold beer, according to Kathleen. Now with a fine array of seafood, pastas, and an open grill, there is a little something for everyone — in addition to good old hot dogs and hamburgers.
When asked why people like to frequent the restaurant, Mace said that it's all because of the ambiance.
The happy atmosphere mixed with service that comes with a smile can be attributed mostly to the people who work there. Most of the staff are locals themselves. "We try and give jobs to kids in the community. A lot of employees that work here are school teachers working in the summer time, as well as local kids," said Kathleen.
Both Mace and Kathleen feel that it's hard not to be happy eating at a place that feels like home. The only difficult thing to do when you eat at The Shack is decide what the best thing on the menu is.
